Rome & Assisi Spirituality & Sustainability Conference

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Time to Go Deeper! FACED WITH THE ANTHROPOCENE'S ECOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN OF MODERN CIVILIZATION, we will search together for deeper personal spiritual growth and deeper analyses and strategies for what Thomas Berry called the breakthrough to a new Ecozoic Era for a spiritual and sustainable global future. IN ROME, WE WILL LEARN FROM AND DIALOGUE WITH CARDINAL PETER KODWO APPIAH TURKSON, a native of Ghana, who led the process that helped Pope Francis craft his papal encyclical LAUDATO SI'. We will meet with the Cardinal in his offices at the historic Palazzo San Calisto on the famous Piazza di San Calisto in Rome's medieval Trastevere district. IN ASSISI, WE WILL EXPLORE MORE DEEPLY: the lives of Saints Francis and Clare; Thomas Berry's vision of the new "Universe Story" and "Great Work" of transition to the Ecozoic Era; the wisdom traditions of world religions and indigenous spiritualities; the Earth Charter as global ethics; the United Nations "Agenda 2030" for sustainable development; and transformative path in education, the arts, and lifestyles. WE WILL DRAW INSPIRATION FROM eight previous Assisi conferences in the 1990s, which featured Thomas Berry, and continue the work of the 2017 Rome-Assisi Conference on Spirituality & Sustainability. As visionary people from a range of ecological-spiritual perspectives, centers, and movements, we will explore how we can work together more deeply and effectively for a spiritual, just, peaceful, and ecological future. CONFERENCE GOALS GOAL 1 – BREAKDOWN / BREAKTHROUGH Explore breakdown of civilization in the Anthropocene and breakthrough from Cenozoic Era to Ecozoic Era. GOAL 2 – COMMON SPIRITUAL GROUND Explore common ground for ecological sustainability across wisdom traditions of world religions & indigenous spirituality GOAL 3 – PRACTICES, POLICIES, STRATEGIES Explore practical tools, both spiritual and organizational, for personal, social, and ecological transformation. GOAL 4 – VISIONARY YOUNG LEADERS Identify & support young leaders seeking transformative global change based on spirituality and sustainability.
